History of Athletics

 

 San Fernando High School has a storied history in athletics. The first mention of athletics in the school can be traced back to the 1903 yearbook, stating that there had been interest in sports for three to four years. In the early years, the most popular sports at San Fernando High School included tennis, track, baseball, basketball. As time went by, more sports were added to the roster and in the 80’s, girls sports began to grow. The school has accumulated an impressive array of championships across various sports, showcasing its dedication to athletic excellence.

S.F.H.S. has served as a breeding ground for talented student-athletes, many of whom have gone on to compete at the collegiate level and even in professional leagues. The success of these athletes has contributed to the school's reputation as a powerhouse in sports development.

S.F.U.H.S. first football team established in 1915.

Fun Facts

  • The football field was originally called the Mac Donald Field.
  • The lights on the football field were not added until 1986.
 

Era of Championships

 1926 was the start of the schools successful years in athletics. The Tiger teams won two major championships in football and track, second place in basketball, and at the time of the yearbook publication the baseball team had won three games in a row. John W. Hughes of U.S.C. was the new coach in 1925-1926 that led the Tigers to victory. Coach Mike Cirino led the Tigers to victories at the L.A. Coliseum in 1934 and 1937.

The Dream Team

 San Fernando High School made football history in the mid-1970s guided by future USC stars Charles White, Malcolm Moore, and Kevin Williams. The team achieved remarkable success, winning the L.A. City Football title in consecutive years, 1974 and 1975. Prior to the 1975 season, they held the prestigious ranking of #1 in the entire country. Many football stars got their start on the San Fernando High School field.

Bobby Chacon

 Bobby “Schoolboy” Chacon was an American professional boxer who competed from 1972 to 1988. Graduating from San Fernando High School in 1969, he entered the professional boxing scene in 1972 while studying at California State University, Northridge. Chacon's aggressive fighting style led to victories in the WBC featherweight and super featherweight divisions. His significant contributions to the sport were recognized with his induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005, solidifying his legacy as a champion in the ring.
