Junior Timeline
This is a month-by-month breakdown of what you should be doing during your junior year to prepare for college.
August/September
- Register for the PSAT test with the College Counselor (test takes place in October)
- Take a practice PSAT Test online or in the PSAT Student Guide (available in the College Center)
- Enroll in one of the community college classes offered after school at SFHS
- Get involved in extra-curricular activities either at school or in your community
October
- Take the PSAT in October
- Register to take the SAT test in May and the SAT Subject tests in June if necessary
- Meet with your academic counselor to review your A-G requirements and grad check
- Start researching colleges (requirements, majors, cost, etc) so you can start building a list of schools
December
- Study for finals!! Junior year is the most important for colleges to see and heavily affects your eligibility GPA for college admissions!!
- Review your PSAT test results and use them to help you study for the real SAT you will taking in May or June. Sign up for free SAT prep through Khan Academy.
- Investigate summer programs and internships
- Continue researching colleges and building your college list
January
- Investigate and plan to apply for summer programs and internships, as they fill up quickly. These programs look very good on college applications!!
- Meet with your academic counselor to make sure you are on track for graduation
- If you need to make up bad grades from Fall semester, start thinking about summer school or adult school.
February
- Take a Practice SAT Reasoning or SAT Subject Test, if available. Check your local library for free practice SAT/ACT.
- Start/continue to visit colleges and college websites, attend college fairs or go on college visit field trips
- Continue to investigate summer programs and internships
- Take an interest/career inventory test offered through collegeboard.org or http://www.bls.gov/k12/ to learn about different career pathways and the education needed for certain jobs/careers.
- Register for the April or June ACT
- Register for the March/May/June SAT
March
- Start working on your Brag Sheet for letters of recommendation
- Start working on Personal Insight Questions and Personal Statement for college applications
- Make final plans for summer whether it is summer school or a summer program/internship
- Plan to visit colleges during Spring Break
- Investigate colleges and various college majors to start refining your college list
- Plan your senior classes- keep them academic as your senior year counts for colleges
- Participate in SAT School Day
April
- Continue to search college sites and scholarships
- Visit college campuses and attend college fairs to help you finalize your college list
- Take ACT Test
- Finalize summer plans, consider jobs, internships, summer school, or summer jobs
May
- Take the SAT Reasoning, SAT Subject and AP Exams
- Keep up your grades in all classes
- Keep a college file up to date with deadlines
- Attend local college nights for colleges you may be interested in attending
- Study for finals!! Remember junior year is one of the most important when it comes to college admissions!!
Summer before Senior Year
- Use your time wisely- no loafing- take classes, get a job, or do a college summer program
- Visit colleges and begin to finalize your college list
- Keep working on your personal insight questions for UCs and personal essay for Common Application
- Finalize your list of colleges
- Update your Brag Sheet so you have it ready to ask for letters of recommendation in the Fall
- Apply to colleges that have “rolling admissions” NOW!
- Begin the Common Application online August 1st
